Minecraft Wiki Saying Goodbye to Fandom

Minecraft Wiki Admins Finalize the Move

The Minecraft Wiki admins have successfully moved and are fully operational on their new site, minecraft.wiki. The move had been in public discussion for months, with the change being completed on September 24, 2023. They deliberated on where to host the website and landed on Weird Gloop, a company that also hosts the RuneScape Wikis. With Weird Gloop’s prior expertise of managing vast Wikis, they aided the admins in their migration from Fandom to the new minecraft.wiki.

Though the transfer is complete, the admins cannot wipe out the existing Fandom Wikis. Fandom has an anti-spam patrol that observes all Wikis, giving them the ability to immediately revert edited pages to previous versions. Emptying out pages and leaving a link to the new website will undoubtedly incur the revert. Therefore the admins have no choice but to leave the old Fandom Wiki up. They implore everyone to avoid the Fandom domains, and spread the easier, more accessible domain of minecraft.wiki among the community.

What Went Wrong With Fandom?

Fandom is one of the most used host websites for fan Wikis over the years, but the user experience on the site has taken a turn for the worse. They prioritized fitting as many ads per page as possible, with accessibility to the pertinent information barely given even a second thought. It is especially egregious on mobile devices, where autoplaying video ads will take up half the screen and follow you as you scroll down.

The website also bloats pages with its own unnecessary outside links and branding through the infamous sidebar that can’t be customized or removed. Links to other Fandom Wikis that are irrelevant would be placed within pages. All in all, so much fluff and filler kept being added that website performance degraded and loading times suffered. The Minecraft Wiki community could no longer tolerate it, leading to the move to a new host.
