Nioh 3 Overview
Nioh 3 is an action role-playing game developed by Team Ninja and published by Koei Tecmo, released on February 6, 2026 for PS5 and PC platforms. It is the third installment of the Japanese action RPG.
The game takes place in a dark-fantasy version of Japan's historical eras, including the Heian, Sengoku, Edo, and for the first time in the series, the Bakumatsu period. Players play as a character named Tokugawa Takechiyo, who is on the verge of becoming shogun but faces a rebellion led by his brother Kunimatsu and a horde of supernatural yokai.
Nioh 3 introduces a dual-style combat system that allows players to switch freely between a traditional "Samurai" style and a new "Ninja" style. The Samurai style retains hallmark features like multiple weapon stances and ki (stamina) management, while the Ninja style emphasises agility and ranged attacks and a "Mist" clone mechanic for distraction and sneak attacks. Similar to the last installment, the character creation feature returns here, It was also included in the limited-time demo.

Nioh 3 Gameplay
Nioh 3 is looking to be the biggest and boldest game in the series yet, by pushing the limits in transforming the game into a full open-world style action RPG. It was announced that there will be two distinct combat styles that the player can use to fight the demons, namely: Samurai and Ninja. Samurai is similar to the gameplay that Nioh is known for, with the addition of new actions such as Arts Proficiency, Deflect, and more.
While Ninja is a new style that uses quick movements like dodging and aerial maneuvers to be able to use a variety of Ninjutsu to strike the enemy from any angle. Techniques like Mist which leaves a clone after a successful attack and Evade to avoid enemy strikes with perfect timing. Use both combat styles as you see fit, either by switching to each style seamlessly or use one style you're comfortable with, to dominate the battlefield and drive out the yokai.

Tokugawa Takechiyo
Takechiyo is the grandson of Tokugawa Ieyasu and the designated heir to the Tokugawa shogunate. Though gifted with the rare ability to see guardian spirits from a young age, his talents were often overshadowed by his younger brother Kunimatsu, resulting in doubts about his succession. Ultimately, Ieyasu himself affirmed Takechiyo's rightful place as successor.
Tokugawa Kunimatsu
Kunimatsu is the younger brother of Takechiyo who grows jealous of his sibling's position as heir to the shogunate. In resentment, he allies with dark forces and leads yokai against Takechiyo, becoming a central antagonist in the story.
Himiko
Himiko is portrayed as the queen of Yamatai Kingdom, and a powerful sorceress who commands the ancient magic of Kido. She serves as both a guide and a formidable presence in the story.
