Girls' Frontline 2: Exilium Latest News

⚫︎ Sunborn CEO Yuzhong: Girls’ Frontline 2 Earns 2 Million Viewers on First Day of Global Release, Surpassing Expectations (Weixin)

Girls' Frontline 2: Exilium Overview

Girls’ Frontline 2: Exilium (Dolls' Frontline 2: Exilium) is the sequel to the widely popular tactical mobile game Girls’ Frontline. It’s being developed by Sunborn Network Technology, also more popularly known as MICA Team, for PC and mobile. There is no official release date yet for the global version, but mobile storefronts expect the game to drop on December 3, 2024.

The world of Girls’ Frontline 2: Exilium is the original game’s direct canonical sequel, occurring fifteen years after the latter’s conclusion. It follows the continuation of the franchise’s central protagonist, the Commander’s tale after they left Griffin & Kryuger to become a bounty hunter. They are accompanied by their new, trusted partner Groza, as well as a lineup of new and returning T-Dolls on their mobile construction vehicle, the Elmo.

Girls' Frontline 2: Exilium Gameplay

Girls’ Frontline 2: Exilium is a turn-based tactics role-playing game that shares many mechanics with the XCOM franchise of games. Combat follows a simulation of operational warfare and military tactics where the players must command their T-Dolls, neural AI-driven androids with female appearances built as expendable units for military missions, in small-scale skirmishes with enemy squads.

The combat mainly revolves around the interaction between units, who predominantly use rifles, pistols, and other firearms, and the various obstacles on the map they can use as cover. Units under cover are able to take significantly less damage than they would otherwise receive out in the open. However, cover bonuses can be bypassed using several means, such as by flanking targets, using explosives, destroying covers, etc.

T-Dolls can be upgraded by leveling them up, equipping and strengthening their weapons, using attachments, specializing their skills, and various other means. The materials required to improve their stats can either be farmed or pulled from the game’s gacha. Most of its contents require stamina to access, so farming materials are time-gated unless players are willing to spend money. On the other hand, its gacha system is the primary method to obtain T-Dolls and weapons, and it features an SSR rate of 0.6% (0.3% for T-Dolls and 0.3% for weapons).

Girls' Frontline 2: Exilium Reviews

Outstanding, but with Minor Issues

Game8 describes Girls' Frontline 2: Exilium as a refreshing sequel that combines XCOM-inspired tactics with the beloved character-driven storytelling of the original Girls' Frontline. Shifting to turn-based unit control, the game emphasizes strategic positioning and highlights the Commander’s relationships with T-Dolls, adding emotional depth. High-quality visuals, immersive voice acting, and dynamic animations enhance the experience, although minor flaws like inconsistent AI and tough gacha rates persist. Overall, GFL2 offers an accessible, engaging experience for both new and returning fans.

Meanwhile, Pocket Gamer lauds the game for its rich visuals and high-quality, cinematic cutscenes that contribute to an immersive experience, giving the game a score of 4/5. The storytelling, following the Commander’s darker journey, is a strong point, though it can be dense for new players unfamiliar with the franchise’s extensive lore. The tactical gameplay, inspired by XCOM, is well-implemented, requiring strategic positioning and use of cover, but some players may find it slow-paced. Pocket Gamer also notes issues with the user interface and highlights that the gacha system has shifted to a more monetized model compared to the original game, which might disappoint fans of the original resource-based model.
