Final Fantasy XIV Overview
Final Fantasy XIV (FFXIV, XIV, FF14) is an MMORPG and the fourteenth mainline entry and the second MMO of the historic franchise, Final Fantasy. The game has come a long way since its 2010 release. Considered a commercial failure during its initial release, it was shut down in November 2012 for a complete overhaul and change in management, as a new team led by Naoki "Yoshi-P" Yoshida would be assigned as the game's new director.
Relaunching in 2013 as A Realm Reborn or FFXIV 2.0, the game featured a new engine, improved network infrastructure, and revamped user interfaces, gameplay, and narrative. Since then, FFXIV has had five (5) different expansions released, namely: Heavensward (2015), Stormblood (2017), Shadowbringers (2019), Endwalker (2021), and Dawntrail (2024). It has become Square Enix's most profitable Final Fantasy title to date, with over 65 million subscribers. Additionally, the game has boasted multiple awards for its compelling narrative and inclusive community that has persisted till today.
Final Fantasy XIV Gameplay
Final Fantasy XIV is an MMORPG that features a persistent state world similar to games like World of Warcraft (WoW), Guild Wars 2 (GW2), and more. The game features the classic "Final Fantasy Job System," where players can freely switch between the different classes and jobs in the game without creating new characters, as opposed to other MMOs. Set in the fantasy realm of Eorzea, players will begin their journey as the "Warrior of Light", chosen as a hero to fight against many threats ranging from war-hungry empires, powerful deities or Primals, and even world-ending calamities.
Players will create their own avatars from a variety of different races (e.g., Hyur, Miqo'te, Lalafell, Roegadyn, etc.) and personalize their appearance. Players can engage in different activities such as crafting, gathering, and other group content featuring combat. They will also select their starting classes to determine their starting cities and their role in combat. FFXIV's combat employs a tab-targeting system combined with global cooldown abilities (GCDs) as well as off-global cooldown abilities (oGCDs) for a dynamic and engaging combat experience.

The MMO That Came Back to Life and Continues to Thrive
With the game's initial negative reviews in its initial launch in 2010, Square Enix was forced to address the game's flaws and make something out of the game's poor state. After shutting down the game's servers in 2012 and a new team at the helm to improve on the game, it relaunched with a largely positive reception from both critics and players alike. It's current expansion, Dawntrail, launched on July 2, 2024, where it has garnered generally positive reviews but not as high as its previous expansions, specifically Shadowbringers and Endwalker.
Game8 scored the game's current expansion, Dawntrail, 80/100. The reviewer highlighted several aspects, like the noticeable graphical overhaul and its emphasis on the game's lighting, the bold musical direction, and the game's normal content being a lot more engaging than its previous expansions. However, the story took a big hit as the reviewer described the pacing and development as "disjointed and jarring."
IGN scored Dawntrail an 8/10, where the reviewer highlighted that the game has noticeable growing pains throughout its long lifespan, but sets itself up for a new era in its storyline. The reviewer also highlighted the expansion's combat encounters and characters that have accompanied them throughout their experience. In a summary, the expansion lives up to the FFXIV brand, hits the peaks that the game is known for in its narrative, and continues to impress despite the past problems being there.
