CD Projekt Red Denies Claims of Sony Acquisition
"Nothing has changed"
The last year has been significant for CD Projekt Red. Between The Witcher series surpassing 75 million copies sold, Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty DLC coming to Summer Game Fest, a Cyberpunk 2077 sequel on the far horizon, a new Witcher game in development, and other updates that keep fans on their toes, it doesn't seem like the famous and revered developer has any worries about its near future. That was why rumors regarding a Sony acquisition circulating seemed strange to some. To be fair, that rumor isn't anything new. It's been out there for quite a while for years, fueled by vocal or interested people hearing it through the grapevine.
CD Projekt Red had made it clear back then; they wanted to remain independent. And on their recent earnings conference's Q&A section, CD Projekt President and CEO Adam Kiciński mention, "Nothing has changed on our end." He then follows it up with "CD Projekt is not for sale," before proudly and fondly elaborating how they find it more fulfilling to follow their own path.
This matter was also addressed at another time recently by YouTuber LastKnownMeal, who assures his audience that the acquisition is "not happening, its possible, but its not happening.". His statement is then affirmed by CD Projekt Red PR Rep Ola Sondej, who states that "Yah, we're not in such talks with Sony."
With Sony's acquisition of Bungie, Firesprite, and Housemarque, the rumors of a CD Projekt Red acquisition aren't without basis. However, there is also no smoke without a fire, so there must be some truth behind the gossip. Perhaps Sony had already approached them but had been turned down? Without any official statements, no clear conclusions can be made. But there is no doubt that considering CD Projekt Red's reputation and scale, an acquisition by any entity would be a significant game-changer.
