Helldivers 2 is the U.S.’s Best-Selling Game of 2024 So Far

Helldivers 2 Continues to Dominate

The stats are in, and it’s official: Helldivers 2 remains the U.S.'s best-selling game of 2024 so far. This is based on Circana’s monthly report of the U.S. Video Game Market Highlights that reveals interesting statistics of the video game market, including hardware, digital game sales, projections, and more within the five-week timespan from March 3 to April 6, 2024. Executive Director and Video Game Industry Analyst at Circana, Mat Piscatella, posted the results on Twitter(X), showing the changes in the market for the month of March.

Looking at other sales metrics, Helldivers 2 dropped to second place in total sales for the month of March for all platforms and for PlayStation exclusively. In terms of player count, Helldivers 2 placed first and fifth on Steam and PlayStation, respectively, which is an improvement from last month when the game placed seventh. Interestingly, Helldivers 2 is also now ranked as the seventh highest-ranking game in lifetime U.S. dollar sales for Sony-published titles after just two months of release.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 Outsells Predecessor Within One Month

For the month of March exclusively, Dragon’s Dogma 2 headlines the ranks as the best-selling premium game, beating out Helldivers 2. Additionally, it also placed first and third on sales for Xbox and PlayStation exclusively for the month of March. Despite being only included this month, it also managed to become the third best-selling game for all platforms from year-to-date. During its short run, it also managed to outsell both Dragon’s Dogma and Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen combined when comparing dollar sales from life-to-date.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Slides, But Remains Part of Top 10

Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth continued to stay in fourth place in the best-selling game from year-to-date but fell to seventh place from second in sales for the month of March. Comparing it to the historic franchise, it places fourteenth across all Final Fantasy releases in lifetime dollar sales in the U.S. market, where Final Fantasy XV, Final Fantasy 7: Remake, and the original Final Fantasy 7 place first, second, and third, respectively.

PlayStation 5 Leads Hardware Sales Despite Drop in Total Hardware Sales

PlayStation 5 took the lead in the console market for the month of March and the first quarter, followed by the Nintendo Switch in terms of unit sales, and then the Xbox Series in terms of dollar sales. However, all three consoles declined to a minimum of 30% year-on-year in terms of dollar sales and hardware spending in the first quarter of 2024, which is down 24 percent compared to 2023’s first quarter.
