Squirrel With A Gun Overall - 74/100

Squirrel With A Gun is a solid comedic experience that comes with a pretty decent 3D action shooter platformer experience. It has a good variety of different tools at your disposal to get through the game’s multiple levels, while having a good number of collectibles to keep you interested during your playthrough. It does have a bit of a problem of being a bit too repetitive after a few hours though, which makes the game a lot less interesting. It’s not the most compelling or most demanding game out there as a platformer, but it does get an award for being one of the funnier ones.

Squirrel With A Gun Story - 5/10

There’s not much of a story with the game, as the game’s main draw is that you’re a furball with a loaded gun. You’re a pesky neighborhood rodent that was able to find a top secret golden acorn and is now on the run against the mysterious Agents. There’s not much else to say that makes the game compelling, but its funny animations and expressions definitely help in delivering that comedic experience.

Squirrel With A Gun Gameplay - 7/10

The game is sort of like a fusion between Goat Simulator and other platforming games. It would definitely lean more towards the platforming aspect most of the time, as the game’s platforming mechanics definitely shine the most. The shooting mechanics aren’t great, but you usually just need a few well-placed shots at the enemies’ heads to get a takedown. The main issue, however, is the game’s repetitive nature, despite having different platforming segments in each level. After a few hours of playing the game, you’ve already done most of the game’s overall gameplay experience, which is definitely the game’s weaker aspect.

Squirrel With A Gun Visuals - 9/10

The game looks pretty good, but it does have its flaws. The visuals of the game are pretty good, and having multiple outfit choices makes the player-rodent a bit more interesting than it is. The Unreal Engine influence is definitely apparent, and with the forced motion blur and sometimes blinding illumination, some of the visuals make it an eyesore instead of it being pleasing.

Squirrel With A Gun Audio - 8/10

Audio-design wise, it’s pretty decent. There’s not much else to say about the rest of the audio design other than it being good for the most part. However, the music in the game is definitely the best part, as it’s easily one of the things that made the game a lot better.

Squirrel With A Gun Value for Money - 8/10

For $19.99, the game offers a sandbox puzzle platforming hybrid that is honestly quite funny. If you’re a fan of games like Goat Simulator, then I don’t see why you wouldn’t want to play as a squirrel with a gun. Not to mention that it actually has a decent amount of levels to get through while keeping you interested in its other collectible items.

Squirrel With A Gun Review: Surprisingly Nutty

Image

Hearing about the game’s title, I was already intrigued about how and why the squirrel ever got a gun. It’s great to know that the question gets answered fairly early on. Squirrel With A Gun is an interestingly decent game; it has good visuals, interesting platforming, and great music. However, the game struggles to shrug off the genre’s repetitive nature as the novelty of its platforming becomes stale after a few hours.

Visually speaking, the game looks pretty good. Using Unreal Engine, you can clearly see the influence of the engine and the numerous options that you have for the game’s visuals and graphics. There are a few misses, however, as the game has forced motion blur and some problems with lighting at certain areas. The former may be a personal preference, but I find it quite disorienting. Where the game is good at is its animations. Both in gameplay and in its cutscenes, you can see that this was one of their main focal points.

Image

Audio-design wise, the game doesn’t have anything remarkable to speak of except its music. The music is by far the best part of the game, as the title screen is already setting the game’s tone, while the background music for the different areas is something I can listen to during a long work session.

As for the game’s story, there’s not much to say about it either. You play as a squirrel who finds a secret Golden Acorn, and then you get caught in the act of stealing by some mysterious Agents who are now after you. A series of funnily animated cutscenes ensue, and you find yourself able to pick up a gun that fell on the floor after an agent trips and falls, which then begins your crusade to find every Golden Acorn. After these events, there are more funny scenes, but not a whole lot more to add to the narrative.

Image

Moving on to the gameplay, it’s a decent platformer coupled with a few interesting puzzles. The game’s main platforming gimmick is the ability to use the recoil of the gun for extra jumps. This is actually a pretty interesting mechanic given that other guns have varying amounts of bullets and a different strength of recoil. While it’s fun for a few hours, this quickly becomes quite repetitive. It’s not as if it’s not fun; it’s more of just falling prey to a common problem that platformers have when they don’t have enough gimmicks.

The game’s shooting mechanics are also surprisingly decent. I’m not the most accurate shot, and I’m also not an advocate of realism when it comes to video games, but it does feel correct that there’s a massive amount of recoil from shooting the gun. Given that the wielder of a gun is a small squirrel, then maybe realism isn’t exactly the best comparison. Lastly, the game does have a sandbox element to it, which is appreciated. But there's not much else to do than rob innocent civilians or have them pet you and the occasional joyride in the RC car.

Image

All in all, Squirrel With A Gun is a decent experience coupled with great comedic visuals. It’s not the most compelling game, nor is it the best platforming game in terms of mechanics, but it definitely gets points for bringing an absurd idea to life. For $19.99, you get a good amount of things to collect and levels to finish. Besides, who wouldn’t want to play as a squirrel with a loaded M1911?

Pros of Squirrel With A Gun

Things Squirrel With A Gun Got Right
Checkmark Wacky Animations
Checkmark Interesting Platforming
Checkmark Multiple Outfits

Wacky Animations

Image

The game’s biggest draw, aside from its already absurd premise, are the wacky animations that it has. After dealing enough damage, you can go in and do a special takedown on stunned enemies. These animated takedowns are entertaining to watch, especially when you discover that each weapon has a unique animation of its own. Not to mention that the game’s cutscenes are also pretty funny to watch because of the animations.

Interesting Platforming

The main platforming gimmick that this game has is its use of guns for platforming, which is interesting given that the game actually has levels where you need to use your extra jumps precisely. It also has a few climbing mechanics that are pretty simple, which add a little something to the game at least.

Multiple Outfits

Image

One of the main collectible items that the game has are different outfits. You can style the squirrel using different outfits that you find throughout the game. These aren’t just purely cosmetic though, as some outfits actually give bonuses to certain abilities and even give you resistances to certain types of damage.

Cons of Squirrel With A Gun

Things That Squirrel With A Gun Can Improve
Checkmark Not Much of a Story
Checkmark Becomes Repetitive Quickly
Checkmark Saving is Manual
Checkmark Controls Are a Little Too Sensitive

Not Much of a Story

Image

The game isn’t really built to have a compelling story, but more of a funny experience. Don’t expect to have any world-building and other narrative devices in the game, as it’s plainly just a squirrel who’s out to get top-secret golden acorns while being chased by human agents. It’s as absurd as it sounds.

Becomes Repetitive Quickly

Image

A big problem that platformers have is that the game becomes repetitive quickly when they don't have enough gimmicks to keep it interesting. Sadly, Squirrel With A Gun fell prey to this. After a few hours of playing the game, you will find yourself doing the same thing just for different platforming segments. The novelty of being able to use different guns for platforming is definitely interesting, but when you find out that they’re not all that different, then it loses its shine quickly.

Saving is Manual

Image

There’s not too much to say about this con, as save points are manual. While it may not be the biggest annoyance or con in the game, it definitely hits the game’s pacing, as you would want to save after finishing a certain level in the sandbox areas.

Controls Are a Little Too Sensitive

Image

While sensitivity is subjective, it’s apparent that the game’s driving controls are not the best. Driving the RC car is definitely an experience, especially given the imagery of a small rodent riding an RC car to get around the block quickly. However, the controls are a little too slippery, and the car tends to fly off when you drive up ramps.

Is Squirrel With A Gun Worth It?

If You Want a Laugh, Go For It

Image

For $19.99, Squirrel With A Gun is a decent platformer with a better experience of getting a chuckle out of you than its gameplay. Besides, at that price point, you won’t break the bank as well. Fans of games like Goat Simulator might find the game quite entertaining but might have to adjust their expectations as the game is more of a puzzle platformer than a sandbox.
