There are several stories in video game history about massive projects that never see the light of day. One such project was the canceled 2003 third-person beat-em-up action game “Daredevil: The Man Without Fear,” inspired by the renowned Marvel superhero comic book. The game, created by 5,000 Ft. Inc. and scheduled for release by Encore, Inc., boasted an innovative plot and captivating gameplay. But in the end, a problematic development process brought it to an end.

The game's early versions were kept secret from the public for many years. A build from July 2003 was discovered in November 2020 due to the work of video game preservationist PtoPOnline. Then, on October 31st, 2023, a PS2 build dated March 22nd, 2004 surfaced, made public by user Casuallynoted of Hidden Palace. It was said that the build came from an anonymous 5000 Ft. Inc. employee. This incredible discovery was then enabled and made playable by SolidSnake11.

The game is available for download at HiddenPalace.org.

Canceled Due to Internal and External Conflicts

The project started with 5,000 Ft., a small-team of developers who helped transfer 3DO's Army Men series to the PlayStation. They had plans to make their own game afterwards. Their partnership with Encore, Inc. made it possible to use Marvel IP in video games, such as the Daredevil series.

When word leaked out about the upcoming release of the Daredevil movie, the project—originally planned as a small PlayStation 2 game honoring the character's pivotal moments—took a dramatic turn. The game evolved into a massive open-world action game for the PlayStation 2, Xbox, and PC as the budget increased.

Microsoft and Sony both had an impact on the development process. Sony pushed for a grinding mechanic, a la Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, and a beat 'em-up fighting system. Microsoft gave the developers greater leeway in terms of creativity. Marvel and Sony had different creative visions for the game's direction, which led to creative disputes between all parties.

The choice to create a proprietary engine marked a significant turning point. It made it challenging to incorporate Daredevil's special skills into the game's mechanics. The project continued with perseverance despite these obstacles.

The scheduled release date was rescheduled from February 2003 to the summer of the same year, due to internal conflicts that included accusations of drug misuse. Even though the project was close to completion, many from the team left. Marvel withheld its approval because they were dissatisfied with the route that Sony had influenced the game to take.

Daredevil Plot: A Gritty Tale of Justice and Deception

Set in Hell's Kitchen, Daredevil: The Man Without Fear’s events unfold as Daredevil's arch-nemesis, The Kingpin, appears to have been assassinated. His assassination sparks a city-wide gang war, and Daredevil's close friend, Foggy Nelson, gets kidnapped.

Daredevil, together with Elektra, sets off on a mission to save Foggy and restore order to Hell's Kitchen. He discovers The Kingpin's cunning trick: he faked his death to mislead his rivals.

The game's plot is based on the comic book arc “Elektra Lives Again,” although it includes fresh aspects. The ultimate fight occurs in The Kingpin's apartment, where Daredevil must confront his foe and save Hell's Kitchen.
