"Custom Mech Wars" Is the Armored Core You Have at Home (and Why That’s Awesome)
D3 Publisher Unveils Crazy Mech Designs, Gameplay at TGS 2023
Wanted to play Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon, but somehow can't foot the price tag for a copy? Well, guess what: the intrepid heads over at Japanese budget game developer D3 Publisher have got something for you.
"Custom Mech Wars," is coming out on December 14, 2023, and D3 Publisher showed off the gameplay of this zany and highly customizable third-person mech shooter at this year's Tokyo Game Show. It's no Armored Core, but the game has a robot made up of a hammer arm, a Gatling gun, and a luxury sedan. If that's not as terrifying as Balteus, then I don't know what is.
At first glance, Custom Mech Wars plays a lot like other mech shooters, especially Armored Core. It may even have similarities to D3 Publisher's Earth Defense Force series developed by Sandlot. From what we've seen so far, it seems the game is made with the same engine as EDF.
But the real meat of the Custom Mech Wars Media Briefing at TGS was the various robots you can make if you put your mind to it. Want a traditional heavily-armed robot with Gatling guns sticking out in all the right spots? You can do that. How about a car with legs? Totally doable. What about just being a pair of legs? Oh yeah, you can definitely deploy in a mission with just legs.
That's not all, though. You can pilot a robot with a huge head, a mech in the shape of the most delectable hamburger known to man, and even a mech that has a drill sticking out somewhere rather... questionable. As long as you have the parts, you can make your own off-brand Gundams, Armored Cores, Knightmare Frames, Muscle Tracers, VOTOMS, or whatever else you can think of.
It doesn't even have to be a robot. Based on images shown by D3, you can stick several robot heads and cannons on a commuter train, save the preset, and deploy to battle with your rail rider of death.
