There's No Better Time to Put Geno in Smash Than Now

Image

Geno, our favorite blue boy, is arguably the most popular character from the original Super Mario RPG, amassing a following up until now. With the Remake almost here, is now the best time to put him in Smash? Read on to learn our take on the matter.

Should Geno Be Put in Super Smash Bros.?

Image

There may be several copycats trying to replace the OG, but there’s no multi-universal crossover brawler quite like Super Smash Bros., and everyone’s got their own draft pick for the roster. Although there are countless memes circulating the internet all asking the same question - "Should_______ be in Smash?" - not all of them are purely for laughs.

With the Super Mario RPG Remake almost upon us, it’s about time that we ask the question again: "Should Geno be in Smash?". Below is a list of arguments, theories, and things to consider in trying to answer exactly that.

He’s Kinda Already in Smash

Image

Yep, you read that right, Geno is already in Smash, just not in the way you expected. Geno exists in SSB4 and SSBU as an alternate costume for the Mii Gunner character. This served as a direct reference to his character, as the two pieces comprising the alternate skin are named "Geno Hat" and "Geno Outfit", respectively. He also appears as a profile icon for SSBU’s online mode.

Many fans would consider this the proverbial nail in the coffin for Geno’s inclusion in the game as he is already in it. This is speculation, however, and isn’t at all indicative of whether or not he’ll be a part of the SSBU roster.

He Was Shafted for Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Image

In an interview with the Nintendo Dream publication in 2016, series creator Masahiro Sakurai admitted that Geno was intended to be in Super Smash Bros. Brawl for the Wii. This obviously did not push through, though Sakurai never stated the reason why. He did admit afterward that this was, in part, the reason for Geno’s cameo as an alternate outfit in SSB4. This concludes Sakurai’s statement on Geno’s inclusion in the series.

While it’s unclear if Sakurai maintains his position on Geno’s addition to the roster, we at least know that the idea isn’t without precedent on the developer’s side of things.

The Fans Would Go Absolutely Wild

Image

As stated before, Geno is arguably the most popular character to come out of the original Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars for the SNES. This is evidenced by the admittedly impressive hype that surrounded his announcement as an alternative costume for SSB4. Nintendo would be remiss to let such a gold mine of fan reception and appreciation go by untapped, but doesn’t guarantee that he’ll be in Smash.

His RPG Moveset is Begging for a Smash Adaptation

Image

Geno debuted in an RPG game rife with special attacks and abilities, which makes him prime Smash Bros. material when it comes to adapting his moveset for a fighting game. Specials like Geno Whirl, Geno Flash, and Geno Beam would look amazing on the SSBU stages. How well he fits in with the Smash Bros. cast was pretty much proven by his costume appearance already.
Image

That being said, Nintendo isn’t one to pick fighters for their roster based on moveset alone. Some of their recent inclusions make no sense, as they aren’t even fighters (looking at you, Duck Hunt). At best, we at least know that if Geno were to be in Smash, he’d have a moveset similar to what he had in Super Mario RPG.

So What’s the Final Verdict?

It’s Unlikely to Happen, But Now Is a Good Time to Put Geno In Smash

Image

Wishful thinking is the best we can do for now. Nintendo has not spoken about the matter at all and the above-mentioned points aren’t conclusive. It also seems as though Smash Ultimate is done with adding any more DLC. There is no doubt that the fans want Geno in Smash and that he’d fit in with the roster nicely, but the ball is in Nintendo’s court and we can’t really do anything else but wait and wish.
