SUPERVIVE Review (Alpha Playtest)

An Impressive Spin On Battle Royales

Image

As a massive Eternal Return addict (3,150 hours and counting, help me), the development of a new MOBA with a battle royale mode instantly attracted my attention. The genre accomodates the open and multidirectional engagement of battle royales very well, as evidenced from the thousands of hours I've spent on that one game. Its bird's eye view allows fights to use far more tactical strategies that employ the terrain, and the use of abilities that follow the mouse's very specific targeting means that the skill floor is quite low while maintaining a high ceiling.

But what's even better about SUPERVIVE is that, like any good battle royale game, it incentivizes player engagements using different objectives. For example, boss mobs give high-ranking consumables and other desirable loot, and specific areas have give drops than others after a certain time elapses. That means players can congregate on these areas voluntarily, opening up various possibilities for deciding priorities.

Accessible WASD Controls

Image

While MOBA games tend to use the mouse for both aiming and movement, the use of WASD controls removes half of the mouse’s workload so that it can be dedicated to aiming your skills. This frees mouse control by a large margin, allowing you to make fine movements and accurate attacks practically simultaneously.

However, this may be contentious as some players are entirely used to MOBA controls for these games. While it may be great if the game allows the option to switch between control schemes, note that there are mechanics not designed for MOBA controls, such as jumping. On top of that, basic attacks don’t latch onto enemies, so balancing would have to affect both schemes separately.

Multiple Ways To Scale Into Late Game

Image

While you have your familiar character level dictating skill upgrades, you can use many other things to get stronger. This is primarily through the acquisition of equipment, which has a more direct influence on your stats.

There are a few combinations possible for equipment. Players might opt to dual-wield weapons to maximize their damage, for example. On the other hand, they could stack as many armor buffs as possible to take a lot of damage.

Equipment is upgraded via materials, and other armor pieces are found either by defeating static mobs and chests or by defeating other players. In other words, you’re not strictly required to engage in PvP fights to grow stronger, which is great given the map’s relatively massive size.

Loads of Environmental Interactions

Image

One great thing about the game’s map is that it’s full of things to engage with. Excluding enemy players, there are static mobs to farm, explosive barrels to trigger, bushes to hide in, and so on. There are also objectives on the map that you can capture, albeit with varying usefulness.

There are even environmental hazards to pay attention to, such as trains barreling down rails and laser grids that go off every few seconds.

This variety allows players to make use of not only the terrain to fight, but also the various objects lying around. Fights that make use of these are naturally showy, and strategies that employ the surrounding doodads are often much more satisfying to pull off.
