Animal Well Gameplay

Animal Well is a 2D action-adventure Metroidvania with uniquely mesmerizing pixel graphics with a CRT filter. It features puzzle platforming and backtracking reminiscent of past Metroidvania titles. The core gameplay revolves around collecting items and using them in meaningful ways to manipulate the environment. These items might range from simple tools to more complex devices, and using them often requires creativity. The environment itself is reactive to these interactions, with puzzles tied directly to the way the world changes around you. Solving these puzzles can unlock new areas, reveal hidden paths, or grant access to powerful creatures.

The creatures you encounter are an essential part of the gameplay, with some acting as obstacles and others providing guidance. The Manticore, for example, plays a significant role in the story and can be either an adversary or an ally, depending on how you interact with it. These encounters add depth to the gameplay, making the labyrinth feel alive and unpredictable. The creatures are also tied to the multiple endings in the game, which offer a range of outcomes based on the player's actions.

Animal Well Story

Animal Well takes place in a dense and surreal labyrinth known as "The Well," a mysterious and interconnected world filled with secrets waiting to be uncovered. You control a creature called the Jumping Bean, who embarks on a journey through The Well to unravel its many hidden puzzles and encounters. There’s no set narrative but the more you explore, the more lore is revealed about the world’s cryptic nature, its creatures, and its guardians.

The main objective revolves around gathering four flames scattered throughout the labyrinth, each protected by a guardian. These flames need to be placed in respective pillars, unlocking the deepest areas of The Well. Along the way, players encounter a variety of unsettling creatures that both challenge and guide them through the labyrinth.
