Blizzard mentions that it's perfectly fine to stop playing Diablo 4 for a while before its first season starts. Read on to learn their reasons for saying so and what you can expect from Diablo 4's first season.
Blizzard Recommends Taking a Break From Diablo 4
Each Season is a Great Time to Go Back to The Game
With Diablo 4's Season of the Malignant coming this July 20, Blizzard has openly stated in an interview with IGN that players who have already achieved what they wanted to do should take a break from the game and avoid burnout.
"When you've reached all the goals and done the things you think are important, and you want to go take a break to play something else for a little while, that's fine," said Diablo 4 associate game director Joe Piepiora. "We do the same thing. But when a season rolls and there are new things for you to come out, that's a great time to come back, particularly if you had a good time playing before, that's exactly when you should come back and check out Diablo 4 fresh."
By now, a month since the game's release on June 6, 2023, untold amounts of people have finished the campaign and have been grinding on World Tier 4, the game's most challenging mode. Some players have even already reached the max level on the game's permadeath setting, known as Hardcore, with a few exceptionally dedicated players finishing Tier 100 Nightmare Dungeons. Because of that, boredom will inevitably start to set in.
Players burning out after playing such grind-heavy games for a few weeks isn't anything new. According to Google Trends, Diablo 3, which also followed seasonal content updates, had spikes of interest whenever the new season dropped. It then tapers off as the season progresses before being revived with another season announcement. In fact, most online games with seasonal content follow this trend.
" I'll be honest, when the next WoW [World of Warcraft] expansion comes out, there's a non-zero chance that I'm going to be playing WoW for a while," Diablo 4 lead game producer Tim Ismay commented. "But it's great to know there's a point that I can come back to Diablo 4, and everybody's on an even footing."
Although Diablo 4 still enjoys widespread popularity, each new season will keep the game fresh and appealing enough to pull burnt-out players back into the game.
What Will Carry Over To Seasons?
Only players who have completed the main campaign can access Season of the Malignant's contents. This makes sense since its events are supposed to occur after the main campaign. There, all players must start anew with level-one characters. This means that taking a break from the game won't make players fall behind those who decided to keep playing. Completing the main campaign also means that any subsequent characters can skip it, meaning they can access season one content from the start.
