Love is in the air and Valentine’s Day is approaching. Here are 8 games that you’d surely want to consider playing with your better half. Read on to find out which games these are, along with their premise and why they’re fun to play as a couple.
8 Games to Play With Your Significant Other This Valentine’s Day
1. Diablo 4
Diablo 4 can be an extremely fun game to play with your significant other. Become a demon-slaying power couple as you wipe out hoards of undead warriors, dangerous beasts, and actual demon lords from hell.
Why it works: Diablo 4 is a top-down ARPG where you and your partner can create your own custom characters. These characters come in different classes, namely the beefy barbarian, the agile rogue, the shapeshifting druid, the skillful sorcerer, and the dead-raising necromancer. Together, you two could use your different sets of abilities to work in tandem and annihilate everything and everyone in your path. You and your partner are in for an exciting journey to the bottom of hell to deal with the rising threat at hand, where you grow stronger together.
2. Until Dawn
Until Dawn is an interactive drama horror game where the player takes control of eight different characters in a cabin on a remote mountain where strange and terrifying events occur. It’s primarily centered around making decisions that alter how the story plays out, along with occasional QTEs (quick-time events). The goal is simple. The goal is to survive the evening and make it to dawn when rescue will arrive.
Why it works: Until Dawn isn’t traditionally what you’d call a multiplayer game. However, since you’d be controlling eight characters, you and your partner could take control of four each and hand out the controller whenever it’s your partner’s turn. See how your decisions play out and enjoy a cinematic horror experience together. It could also make for some friendly competition where the player with more characters alive by the end of it would win.
3. It Takes Two
It Takes Two is a co-op-only story-driven adventure game where two players play as a couple about to divorce. This couple is then transformed into tiny dolls and must work together for things to go back to normal.
Why it works: It Takes Two is a game about couples where the main theme is how each one’s frustration and anger towards each other transforms into love and understanding. It’s a beautiful game that tackles the complex nature of relationships with both its ups and downs. Additionally, the game itself is also really fun and involves mostly co-op puzzle and platforming elements. Like the couple you play as, you two must work together to get through the challenge ahead of you.
4. Overcooked 1&2
Overcooked is a co-op cooking simulator and restaurant management game series. Players would work together to run a kitchen, prepare ingredients, cook, and serve customers in wacky setups in an attempt to become master chefs to face an ancient edible villain.
Why it works: The Overcooked games offer fast-paced chaotic co-op fun, perfect for couples. The premise is light, the gameplay is simple, and the overall vibe of the game is just outright fun. However, it’s worth noting that this game can get extremely stressful, especially when you’re bombarded with orders. Remember that this is just a game and is not worth shouting at each other over.
5. Castle Crashers
Castle Crashers is a very popular 2D side-scrolling beat ‘em up game. Despite its fairly old age of almost 16 years, it still holds up as an excellent co-op game despite its simplicity. You’ll play as knights who are sent on a quest to recover a stolen mystical gem from a dark wizard, along with 4 kidnapped princesses. As you progress, you’ll level up to get stronger and learn new combos. Like the many games we’ve listed so far, teamwork is paramount to success.
Why it works: Castle Crashers is really simple, so whether or not your partner is good at games won’t matter as much in this one. It’s simple, lighthearted, comedic, and loads of fun. Additionally, its graphics and soundtrack have aged very well.
6. Minecraft
Minecraft is another aging entry to this list, and is a 3D sandbox game from 2011 where you could craft and build what your imagination desires. You could build houses/bases, tame animals, mine for resources, fight monsters, and even explore the game’s underworld. There’s a ridiculous amount of things you could do in this game, which is undoubtedly part of the reason why it’s so popular.
Why it works: Minecraft can be played with your partner in a private server online. You two could do normal couple stuff like build houses and raise cattle, all while slaying skeletons and creepers who get too close. It’s like buying your own island to do literally whatever you want, but without having to spend millions of dollars.
7. Baldur’s Gate 3
Baldur’s Gate 3 is an incredible video game adaption of the iconic table-top role-playing game, Dungeons & Dragons. Choose between a variety of different classes and create your character exactly how you want. Embark on a memorable fantasy journey complete with cinematic visuals and fully voice-acted cutscenes. Create a party where your kits and abilities complement each other and participate in strategic turn-based battles. BG3 is a game where the possibilities truly are endless.
Why it works: Baldur’s Gate 3 offers both online and split-screen multiplayer, making it great for couples. It’s an incredible story-driven game and deservingly won last year’s Game of the Year award. However, it may be a bit too complicated for non-gamer partners to fully understand and enjoy. Just be careful you don’t romance the other NPC characters in your party, or do if you’re that kind of couple.
8. Palworld
Palworld needs no introduction as it’s been taking the gaming world by storm. It’s a lot more than just “Pokemon with guns”. It’s an open-world monster-collecting game that closely meshes its survival gameplay with the adorable monsters called Pals you capture.
Why it works: Palworld can be an incredibly fun way to spend time with your significant other. Explore wonderful and breathtaking sceneries together, raise crops, fight and capture Pals, and most importantly, survive together. Palworld is described as having elements of Pokemon, Ark, Breath of the Wild, and more.
