What Kinds of Games Does Dragon Dude Like?

“I have a soft spot for nostalgia-inducing retro games,” he says when asked about which genres he likes. He also enjoys “getting lost” in open-world games, story-driven games that keep him emotionally invested and “keep [him] engaged from start to finish”, and competitive multiplayer games. “The adrenaline rush of intense online battles and the strategic thinking required to outwit opponents are aspects that truly appeal to [him].”

With that in mind, we asked Dragon Dude to list his top 5 video games of all time.

Dragon Dude's Top 5 Games

5. The Last of Us

Image

“I started playing ‘The Last of Us’ because of the immense critical acclaim it received,” Dragon Dude tells us, “I was intrigued by its post-apocalyptic setting and the emphasis on character-driven narratives.”

The Last of Us lets players control Joel in his quest to escort Ellie, a teenage girl, across the US after it was ravaged by a zombie apocalypse. Players must use improvised weapons and firearms to fight against those infected with the mutated fungus that cause people to become violent and cannibalistic. “One memorable moment was the intense and emotionally charged opening sequence, which set the tone for the entire game.”

The game received a TV adaptation in 2023 that, like the game, enjoyed high praise from first time viewers and fans alike.

“The best parts of ‘The Last of Us’ were its gripping narrative, well-developed characters, and the morally complex choices players had to make. The game's ability to evoke strong emotions and create a believable post-apocalyptic world is truly remarkable.”

4. Red Dead Redemption 2

Image

“I have always been a fan of open-world games, and the wild west setting [of Red Dead Redemption 2] intrigued me.” Dragon Dude put in about 40-50 hours to complete the main story, having memorable moments “participating in intense gunfights and duels, which captured the essence of the wild west era.”

Red Dead Redemption 2 is a third-person open-world action adventure game that is the successor to Red Dead Redemption. Despite the name though, it is the third game in the Red Dead series, following the first Red Dead Redemption and Red Dead Revolver, and is actually the prequel to Red Dead Redemption.

Red Dead Redemption 2 follows Arthur Morgan, an outlaw with the Van der Linde gang at the end of the Wild West Era. The noose around the necks of outlaws across the nation tighten, both literally and figuratively, as federal agents and lawmen hunt down the remaining gangs. Arthur and his gang does what it needs to survive, but divisions make Arthur question his long standing loyalty. While he may be an outlaw, he is a man of morals, and it's up to player to decide whether or not he upholds his ideals.

Dragon Dude felt the game’s world was alive, as it was “filled with dynamic events and diverse landscapes.” The random encounters that show up as the player travels, the wild animals, and the bounties you’re bound to chase all add to the “game's immersive storytelling and the sense of freedom it provides within its open-world environment,” according to Dragon Dude. “Riding through the expansive landscapes at sunset, with the game's stunning visuals and atmospheric music” left a deep impression on him, making it land as #4 on his list.

3. Grand Theft Auto V

Image

Another Rockstar Game, Grand Theft Auto V probably needs little introduction as it is the second best-selling video game of all time. Despite coming out in 2013, it still enjoys an active player base to this day.

“I started playing Grand Theft Auto V because of its reputation as a highly immersive and expansive open-world game. The combination of its engaging storyline, dynamic characters, and the freedom to explore a detailed virtual city [sold me on the game],” Dragon Dude tells us.

The game is set in Los Santos, San Andreas, a fictional city in a fictional state similar to real life Southern California. It follows the story of three different characters - Michael De Santa, Franklin Clinton, and Trevor Philips - and how their fates intertwine in their respective lives of crime. With 50-60 hours put into the game, Dragon Dude completed the main story, a few side quests, and spent a good amount of time exploring the city of Los Santos.

What particularly hooked him were “the adrenaline-pumping heist missions, where careful planning and execution were required.” Grand Theft Auto V heavily features the heist mechanic, first introduced in Grand Theft Auto Vice. The game uses heists as a method of telling and advancing the story, and requires the player to further plan how the heist should be pulled off. Do you go in stealthily or violently? Do you need more people in your crew or just go with the three main characters?

He enjoyed the game for “its unparalleled level of freedom, the vastness of its open-world environment, and the sheer variety of activities and missions available,” and “the ability to switch between multiple protagonists added to its appeal.”

“I would highly recommend Grand Theft Auto V to others, especially those who enjoy open-world games and engaging narratives.”

2. Minecraft

Image

“I have played Minecraft for hundreds of hours over the years, as it continues to be a game that I frequently return to for relaxation and creative expression,” explains Dragon Dude.

Minecraft, a 2011 game originally created by Mojang Studios, is a sandbox game that allows the player to create anything they want in a procedurally generated environment. It is probably most known for its Survival Mode, where you must start off with nothing and build yourself up using raw materials and crafting tools. It also has broad appeal with its Creative Mode, where players are free to access all materials and flight to be able to build whatever their imaginations allow.

Image

“I started playing Minecraft because of its unique concept and endless possibilities for creativity. The idea of an open sandbox world where I could build and explore to my heart's content appealed to me.” He would go on to enjoy the game so much that it became the reason for starting his channel.

“Initially, I started by capturing gameplay raw gameplay footage and making some mods videos about Minecraft. As time went on, I honed my video editing skills, experimented with different content formats, and engaged with my growing community of viewers.”

Dragon Dude notes that it may not be for everyone. “Some players may find the lack of explicit goals or guidance in the game to be a downside, as it requires self-motivation and exploration to fully enjoy.”

But for him, “Minecraft allows [him] to shape and explore [his] own virtual worlds, fostering a deep sense of personalization and immersion.” With the most playtime on his list of top 5 games, the reason he keeps coming back is because of “the infinite possibilities for new creations and adventures.”

1. Horizon Zero Dawn

Image

Dragon Dude tops off his list with one more open-world game: Horizon Zero Dawn. "The combination of post-apocalyptic setting, robotic creatures, and the strong female protagonist” were the things that led him to sink 50 hours into the game.

Horizon Zero Dawn is an open-world adventure game featuring a massive world that is overrun by animalistic machines. The story follows Aloy, a young huntress who must fight these robotic creatures and slowly uncover the mysteries that shroud her origin.

Image

“The first encounter with a massive Thunderjaw,” a type of those robotic creatures, was "a thrilling and strategic battle” that hooked him into the game. “The game's polished gameplay, challenging combat, and the deep lore surrounding its post-apocalyptic setting contribute to its high ranking.”

“The game's stunning graphics, immersive sound design, and the satisfying progression system also stood out,” Dragon Dude says. If you’re interested, expect “stunning visual vistas while traversing the diverse landscapes of the game.”
