CEO Not Optimistic About the Success of Palworld PvP

Palworld game developer Pocketpair CEO, Takuro Mizobe, stated that they are considering adding PvP to Palworld in an interview with media website Automation. In an Early Access launch Q&A, Mizobe previously mentioned that they are considering adding PvP elements to the game.

While Mizobe expressed interest in adding PvP, he emphasized that it is important to have a compelling reason for Palworld players to play PvP. He elaborated in the interview, "PvP is really difficult. First of all, we need to think about why we are introducing PvP to Palworld. To begin with, there are many other games that offer a fun PvP experience, so we need to make sure that there is a reason for Palworld players to play PvP."

He further shared that they are not optimistic about the mode being a successful addition. Mizobe said, "Of course, using Pals you caught in battle is one unique point, but only games that give players a good reason to play can survive in the long term. In this sense, I think it’s a very harsh territory. This is why PocketPair is not very optimistic about PvP."

Mizobe estimated the chances of Palworld PvP becoming successful to be below 10%, citing the unpredictable nature of PvP games and the difficulty in determining success or failure until the end.

PvP Plans Detailed

Despite this, he outlined potential features for Palworld PvP. "The first thing that comes to mind is the battle format of pitting Pals against each other," offered Mizobe. The CEO stated that it could involve either Pals fighting alone or alongside humans. It could take place in an "arena-like setting" or anywhere in the entire map, in real time, where players can freely compete.

Various PvP formats were also under consideration, including real-time action battles, and asynchronous battle systems "in which pals fight each other automatically." Likewise, Mizobe said they are also considering a more "casual PvP" format in which pals can be "registered in the arena and users can freely choose to fight, which would lower the barrier to entry."

Palworld Should be a Fun Pal-Catching Game First and Foremost says CEO

Palworld should be a fun Pal-catching game, first and foremost, said Mizobe. After they complete the game, Mizobe stated that PvP additions could be the next goal. "I hope that we will be able to implement a PvP model that is unique to Palworld and will not be short-lived. Earlier, you asked me how I would like to develop Palworld, but first and foremost, I want it to be a game in which catching Pals is fun. After that, I want to make a successful PvP mode as the 'ultimate' goal," Mizobe told Automation.

When Could Palworld PvP Potentially be Added?

As the game is still in its Early Access stage, it is unclear when the full game with all its features will be released. We suspect that the full game could be released by 2025, at the very least. A potential PvP could be added by or beyond the full launch.

Palworld is "About 60% Complete" and May Have New Functions

Meanwhile, CEO Mizobe said the game is about more than half complete. "I think all the basic functions are set, so perhaps about 60% complete? The next phase is all about further perfecting the game." He further detailed their plans of finishing the game, saying, "The important points that remain are how we’re going to implement PvP and to what extent we’re going to release new content. We’re also prepared to add new game functions, so we will observe user reactions and decide what to prioritize based on what everyone wants."
