League of Legends to Remove Mythics in Season 2024
Why Mythics Must Go
In a recent Dev Update, Riot Games announced plans to remove the Mythic items from League of Legends starting in Season 2024. The decision stems from the challenges posed by these items in terms of complexity and balance, as well as the desire to enhance the overall gameplay experience.
The Mythic item system, which was introduced in 2021 for Season 11, aimed to provide unique and exciting gameplay enhancements, like ones found in MMOs and ARPGs. However, it struggled to cater to the diverse champion subclasses. Riot Games used the fighter class as an example. The class can be further divided into different subclasses: divers, juggernauts, skirmishers, etc. Yet the four Mythic items for fighters struggle to fulfill the needs of these subclasses.
Riot Games further stated that they could add more Mythic items to solve this need, but this unfortunately would only increase the complexity of the game. They also found that only roughly 50% of champions were satisfied with their Mythics, leaving the other half feeling unsatisfied.
To fully meet the needs of all champions, the devs would have to introduce approximately 30% more items, which could lead to unnecessary complexity.
Item Considerations
Having only one Mythic item per champion greatly simplified game balancing but came with costs in terms of complexity. Riot Games intends to reduce the power of items that were previously Mythic and downgrad them to Legendary.
Most items would be stackable again, but their power level will be reduced across the board so that stacking would not make it become too powerful.
The Future of Items
Riot Games plan to streamline items significantly while maintaining player satisfaction. The goal is to create simple items with a clear purpose, reducing the complexity of choices. This approach means that some individual items may become less exciting, but it would allow for the champions’ kits to shine. Ultimately, it was this philosophy that led to the axing of the current implementation of Mythic items.
