Bethesda is Looking to Hasten Their Release Times

Optimizing the Process

With Starfield’s release back in 2023 and Bethesda shifting their focus to developing the long-awaited Elder Scrolls 6 game, this means that any other IP, including the recently successful Fallout, will have to wait its turn. In an interview with Kinda Funny Games, Bethesda’s director, Todd Howard, spoke about the current challenge that they face when releasing games.

"You know, they do take a long time, and so I think one of the things we’re focused on here is obviously making sure they’re of the highest quality," said Howard. He also expressed wanting to speed up the process because no one wants to wait that long, saying they’re "also finding ways to increase our output, because we don’t want to wait that long either, right. It’s never our plan, but we want to make sure we get it right."

Hinting at a New Fallout Release Soon?

With Bethesda rolling out games at a slow pace, one of the questions asked during the interview was related to taking advantage of the success of the Fallout TV series. Howard was asked if this newfound popularity led to more possibilities for Bethesda to partner with other developers and studios to release more Fallout-centric spinoffs and games similar to Obsidian’s Fallout: New Vegas.

"I would say we’ve always had those conversations," Howard replied. He follows this up by saying that Bethesda did a lot for the show and also added content for Fallout 76 related to it.

Afterwards, he seemingly hinted at an upcoming release looking towards the future of the franchise saying, "we look at what we’re doing with the franchise and say, do we still feel good about – I can’t reveal it now – our runway for Fallout as a franchise? When is season 2 happening? What are we doing on mobile? What are we doing on 76? What are we doing with this thing? What are we doing with this other thing? When are these landing?"

Howard ended his statement by stating the importance of delivering their games at a high level saying, "if I could snap my fingers and have them all be out and ready, I would, but the main thing is how do we deliver these at a high quality level – that’s always the most important."

Starfield Shattered Space DLC Coming This Fall

During the interview, Howard was also asked about future updates related to Bethesda’s latest sci-fi open-world RPG, Starfield, and its upcoming DLC expansion, Shattered Space. Whether it’s a slip of the tongue or not, Howard remarked that an update is coming soon and that the expansion will be coming this Fall. In addition to this, the major update will be announced publicly sometime this week as well, containing city maps, shipbuilding, "highly requested" display modes for consoles, and more.
