3D Overhaul Retains Original Art Style

Image

Super Mario RPG is renowned for its distinctive isometric, 2.5D art style, where our beloved characters - Mario and his companions - take on a smaller yet undeniably adorable form within a vibrant 2.5D world. In this remake, the art direction has been faithfully preserved while transitioning into stunning 3D visuals. Mario, Peach, Bowser, Mallow, and Geno now come to life with meticulously crafted 3D models that still capture the essence of their original charm.

The environments have undergone impressive transformations as well: lush forests teeming with life, towering hills inviting exploration, and treacherous canyons posing thrilling challenges. The once-simple scenes from the original game have been replaced by captivating cinematic cutscenes that further immerse players into this magical world. Rest assured though; despite these remarkable improvements, the iconic isometric perspective of the original remains intact, having it all still feel familiar.

Yoko Shimomura To Return As Composer

Renowned Japanese composer Yoko Shimomura has officially been confirmed to return and create the soundtrack for the highly anticipated Super Mario RPG remake. While Shimomura is widely recognized for her exceptional work on Square Enix's beloved Kingdom Hearts series, she also garnered acclaim for composing the original Super Mario RPG soundtrack and captivating melodies found in all the games of the Mario & Luigi RPG series.

Remake Could Be Partly Voice Acted

With the potential for more powerful hardware in the remake of Super Mario RPG, there is a chance that the beloved characters may finally have voice lines instead of relying solely on text boxes. If it’s not fully voiced, then maybe the cutscenes will be, and while in-game they'll recite a few lines before leaving the rest to the trusty old text box. We'll finally have the pleasure of hearing Mario make his iconic vaguely Italian noises come to life within the game… well, maybe, since he was a heroic mute character in the original but we can dream, right?

Potential “Limit Break” in Battle, Other Combat Mechanics

Image

In the trailer for the Super Mario RPG remake, there is an intriguing addition - a circle in the lower left-hand corner of the screen displaying a percentage number. It appears that this number increases each time your party executes an attack. Considering that Squaresoft developed the original game, it's possible that Nintendo took inspiration and incorporated their own rendition of a "Limit Break" system. This system may be something that allows one of your characters to unleash a powerful ultimate attack once their Limit Break gauge is full.

There also seems to be a possibility of a new bonus for the Timed Hits mechanic. By executing perfectly timed button presses during attacks, you can damage not only one enemy, but also hit all the surrounding enemies simultaneously. From what we've glimpsed in the trailer, there appears to be a new Chain Attack system as well. We think the more consecutive attacks your party performs against enemies, the more power-ups you'll acquire. However, it's worth considering that as the chain lengthens, enemies might become stronger in response.
