Tales of Arise - How Do Encounters Work

This is a guide on how combat encounters work in Tales of Arise. Read on to learn about how to enter enemy encounters in the overworld, and understand when to enter combat.

How Do Combat Encounters Work

Encounter Enemies by Approaching

Tales of Arise - Encounter Battle System

Tales of Arise uses an battle system where combat scenarios will activate when going near an enemy on the overworld. There are no random battle encounters in this game, and combat scenarios are real-time battles that require you to use your artes and attacks together with other party members.

Enemies Can Also Approach You

Tales of Arise - Enemies Chasing

While you can approach enemies to activate combat encounters, enemies can also do the same. This can be dangerous if you have low HP and CP, but you can also avoid enemies by strategically running past them to skip most encounters entirely.

Going near an enemy will provoke them to attack and chase you. When you are being chased, you will see a red arrow that indicates the enemy's location on the minimap. This arrow will fade once you get far away from them, avoiding the encounter.

Combined Enemy Groups

Multiple groups of enemies chasing you...

...means more enemies to fight.

Multiple enemies can chase you while exploring, and they can combine to form a larger enemy group. It is best to avoid this situation from happening by fighting smaller groups one by one by luring them out, or avoiding large groups entirely.

Be Careful Against Unique Enemies

Tales of Arise - Unique Enemies

When exploring, always be careful of Unique enemies present in the world. Party members will usually point these out to you to make it clear that this is a unique enemy. These enemies are incredibly strong and can wipe out your entire party if you're not strong enough. Avoiding them and coming back when you are more prepared might be the right move.
