A Standoff is a mechanic in the game where you challenge unaware enemies to a short duel and you have the chance to instantly kill them if you win.
Winning a standoff against the enemy will kill them instantly, but if you lose the standoff, your HP will be reduced to 1 then normal combat will resume.
In order to start a standoff, approach unaware enemies and press Up on the d-pad to initiate a standoff. When the standoff has started, you will need to hold the Triangle button and release it when the enemy starts to attack you.
Be watchful during standoffs as the enemy will sometimes feint to make you release the button early causing you to lose the standoff.
If you are successful in the standoff, some enemies will charge at you if you have unlocked the Standoff Streak technique. During this, you can also instant kill them by pressing Square or Triangle right before they attack you.
You can increase your Standoff Streak by learning the technique under the Standoff Line in the Ghost Techniques. You can also increase it by equipping the Sakai Clan Armor.
If you have learned all the techniques under the Standoff Line and have the fully upgraded Sakai Clan Armor equipped, you can kill a maximum of 5 enemies during a single Standoff.
