What are Perks?

Perks are bonuses to your character and Companions which improve a variety of aspects of play, both in and out of combat. Selecting Perks which best suit your play style is essential making it through the game effectively, so be sure to unlock Perks that you will frequently take advantage of.

How to Unlock Perks

Your character will obtain a new Perk point every even level, which you are able to spend to unlock any Perk at any currently available Tier. Only the Level 1 Tiers are initially available, but a new tier is unlocked for every 5 Perks you purchase.

You can also gain Perk points by accepting Flaws. You will receive a Perk point for each Flaw you take on.

How to Unlock Companion Perks

Each Companion will unlock a new Perk point at every fifth level, which you are able to spend to unlock any Perk at any currently available Tier. Only the Level 1 Tiers are initially available, but a new tier is unlocked for every Perk you purchase.

How to Reset Perks (Respec)

It's possible to completely reset both your and your Companions' Perks and Skills after unlocking The Unreliable.

On the ship, you can use the Vocational Competence Respecification Machine for 500 Bits to regain all your use Perk and Skill points. However, you'll want to place with more care the second time, as the cost of activating the machine will double each time you use it.

Also note that Attributes and Aptitudes cannot be reset in any way during the game.

Maximum Number of Perks

It's not possible to unlock every Perk in the game at once, as the level cap and Flaw cap prevent grinding indefinitely for more Perks.

The maximum level for the player and Companions is 30, while the maximum number of Flaws is 3 in Normal Mode, 4 in Hard Mode, and 5 in Supernova Mode. This means that the maximum possible number of Perks for the player is 20, in Supernova Mode.

Because Companions can't gain Flaws, their maximum number of Perks is 6 regardless of the difficulty setting.

Confidence 3 There's something about blood and violence that helps you focus. That's not disturbing at all.
