List of Contents
Overbuilding is a new system in Civ 7 that allows you to replace old buildings from the previous age to boost the tile's yield. New buildings from later ages naturally have better effects, base yield, and bonuses, making it necessary if you want to maximize a tile's potential.
Ageless Buildings are the only ones that cannot be upgraded in later ages, as their effects are either mainly based on adjacencies, improvement to Rural Districts, or unique.
Transitioning to a new Age also makes old Great Works obsolete and overbuilding on buildings that store them, like Libraries and Temples, triggers a unique Narrative Event where you can choose what to get from the recovered Codices or Relics.
Other than increasing the Production on your settlements, there are other ways to speed up the Overbuilding process specifically from certain Policies or Traditions, Celebrations, and Attribute Tree nodes.
In the Exploration Age, you can slot the Commune Policy from the Piety Civic for a 20% Production bonus towards Overbuilding. The Civil Engineering Policy from the Modernization Civic in the Modern Age has a similar effect but with a 30% Production bonus instead.
Choosing the Plutocracy Government in the Exploration Age also grants you access to its Celebration that boosts Production towards Overbuilding for 10 turns. However take note that it is temporary and requires a decent amount of global Happiness to trigger frequently.
When a new Age begins, most buildings not categorized as Ageless or Golden Age will be considered obsolete and will have less yields. It's best to replace them with new ones with better effects so you can keep up with your opponents.
As you progress through the new Age, you will unlock more buildings by studying Civics and researching Technologies of the current Age. These can be used to replace older ones to gain better yields on that tile.
When overbuilding on existing Urban Districts, or placing new Urban Districts in general, it is important to check the yields the new building will get from adjacency bonuses to make replacing the old building more justified. Make sure to place the building on the tile with the best overall yields by checking the yields shown on the Production tab.
Additionally, consider the Civ-exclusive buildings that you will place next to it in the future as most of them give adjacency bonuses to certain types of buildings as well, like Abbasid's Mosque giving adjacency bonuses to Happiness and Culture buildings.
