Street Fighter 6 Gameplay and Premise

Street Fighter 6 - Ryu vs Luke

Street Fighter 6 is the latest entry to Capcom’s popular franchise, promising a more personalized experience this time around with your own avatar in the single-player campaign and online mode, a story that’s set after Street Fighter 3: 3rd Strike, as well as a new take on franchise’s tried-and-tested battle system.

The game is split up into three modes: World Tour, Fighting Ground, and Battle Hub. World Tour is the game’s single-player campaign, where you create your own fighter and roam the world. There, you will duke it out with all sorts of villains while learning signature techniques from the franchise’s legendary fighters to find out the true meaning of the word strength. The story will also focus on what’s happened so far to Ryu, who’s grown out a beard, as well as Luke, who’s grown out his hair.

But who plays Street Fighter for the story, right? The two other modes are Fighting Ground, which is the mode used for local and online fights, and Battle Hub, which is an online multiplayer extravaganza where players can challenge other players to a game of SF6 at one of the hub’s many arcade cabinets. Battle Hub is looking the more promising of the two modes, as you can challenge all sorts of players, participate in online tournaments, and even win prizes.

The twist in SF6’s battles this time around is that characters have access to a so-called “Drive Gauge” which, when filled up, can be used to power special Drive abilities. But using these abilities also leaves the character in a weakened state that’s vulnerable to a counter-attack if your enemy hasn’t been knocked out yet. Other major additions include the return of the classic Super Combo Gauge and new control schemes.

Street Fighter 6 Trailers

Teaser Trailer (February 21, 2022)

In this trailer, we see two familiar faces: Ryu, the mainstay character of the Street Fighter franchise, and Luke, the newcomer from Street Fighter 5. Though it’s light on details, the trailer shows off the graphics for the game and the art style we’ll see more of in future trailers.

Announce Trailer (June 3, 2022)

Here is where we see the first glimpse of Street Fighter 6’s gameplay: The open world that your avatar can explore in World Tour Mode, the classic fights between iconic Street Fighter characters in Fighting Ground, and the fully online Battle Hub. We also see a new character: the drunken martial arts master Jamie, as well as the return of classic characters like Chun-Li.

Real-Time Commentary Feature Trailer (Released June 3, 2022)

One of the new features in Street Fighter 6 is a new real-time commentary system, where an off-screen commentator will give a blow-by-blow of the matches you’re fighting in. The game has Jeremy Lopez as its English commentator, and Aru as his Japanese counterpart.

We’re also promised real-time commentary based on what happens during the fight, with subtitles in 13 languages.

World Tour, Fighting Ground, Battle Hub Game Mode Trailer (Released September 15, 2022)

We get to see more details on the three game modes available for Street Fighter 6. In World Tour, we get to learn different signature moves from characters in the Street Fighter universe like Blanka, Dhalsim, and E. Honda, and use these moves at different locations around the world.

In Fighting Ground, we see some of the arenas that we’ll get to fight in like an Indian monastery, what looks like a South American village, the streets of a non-descript South Asian city, a Chinese temple surrounded by pagodas, the flight deck of an aircraft carrier, and the Street Fighter 6 arena.

We also get a glimpse of other classic characters returning for this game like Guile and Ken.

Lastly, we’re shown Battle Hub mode, where it’s apparently set in a big arcade where you can walk around with your avatar and challenge other players to fight on one of the many cabinets or watch one of the many ongoing fights.

World Tour Opening Movie: The Meaning of Strength (Released September 16, 2022)

In this trailer, we’re shown what’s effectively the ‘story’ for World Tour: your protagonist is on a journey to find the true meaning of strength, and along the way, he’ll come across the game’s characters. More importantly, this is the trailer that shows off the game’s full roster of fighters on release, as well as their character art.

Pre-Order Trailer (Released December 9, 2022)

The video shows us the release date of Street Fighter 6 (June 2, 2023), though we also get to see everything else that comes with the base game: Different kinds of mini-games, the countries we’ll get to visit in World Tour mode, and some of the new characters that come with this installment like Manon, Marisa, and JP.

Street Fighter 6 Showcase (Released April 21, 2023)

The more than 30-minute showcase goes into more detail about SF6’s game modes. Customization options, Sifu-style beat-em-up action, and dynamic battles for World Tour, classic Capcom games, avatar fights, and player clubs in Battle Hub, and clothing damage, sound accessibility, and tutorials in Fighting Ground.

There’s also an offline-only ‘Dynamic’ control scheme where your character will automatically use certain moves depending on how far they are from an opponent, with just a press of a button. This is recommended for beginners who are new to playing Street Fighter.

We’re also shown ‘gimmicks’ in battles that turn Street Fighter 6 into somewhat of a party game where you’ll have to complete different tasks while preventing the enemy from completing theirs. The showcase also shows off the four DLC characters you can get with the Year 1 Ultimate Pass, and the upcoming 2023 Capcom Cup and Capcom Pro Tour.
